What Did I Miss?

After the Cincinnati Reds had taken the first two games of the three-game series with the Cleveland Indians, the Indians had had enough. In the final game of the series last night, the Indians jumped out to a ridiculous 17-0 lead after just 4 innings. The Reds would tack on two runs to make it only slightly better, before the Indians answered with two more runs of their own.

Seven players for the Indians had 2 or more RBI in this one, including Jose Ramirez who went 2-4 with 5 RBI and 2 runs, and Francisco Lindor who went 1-5 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored. Carlos Carrasco got the win for the Tribe, going 5 innings allowing just 1 run and striking out 7 batters. The Reds would add 2 more runs in the 8th, but clearly wasn’t even close to enough. The 19-4 win moves the Indians to 50-42 on the season, while the Reds sit at 41-52.

The World Cup Final is set. One day after France took down Belgium 1-0, Croatia defeated England in an incredibly exciting match that went to extra time. England’s Kieran Trippier scored just 5 minutes into the contest on a miraculous free-kick, but they couldn’t get anything going for the rest of the match.

Ivan Perisic scored in the 68th minute for Croatia, evening the match at 1-1. The normal 90 minutes couldn’t settle the winner, so they played an extra 30 minutes of time. After the first 15 minutes didn’t net anything, the Croatians scored the ultimate game-winner in the 109th minute. Mario Mandzukic scored off of a nice bounce from a 50-50 ball that the English didn’t seem to want. Croatia will take on France this Sunday in the Final, while Belgium and England meet in the 3rd place game on Saturday.

Fox Soccer will not let me embed the highlights, so if you wish to view them, please watch here.

Switching back over to Major League Baseball, the 8 participants for the Home Run Derby have been named. Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals is the biggest name, he is joined by 7 others making their Home Run Derby debut. Milwaukee’s Jesus Aguilar, Philadelphia’s Rhys Hoskins, and Atlanta’s Freddie Freeman will face off against each other in the first round. LA Dodgers’ Max Muncy and Astros’ Alex Bregman will be joined by two Chicago Cubs, Javier Baez and Kyle Schwarber.

The Top Play of the Day comes from what appears to be an AAU basketball game in Texas. With the score tied 65-65 with just one second left, this player steals the inbounds pass, goes up for the shot, bobbles the ball but regains control, and sends it in.

In tonight’s action, the Cleveland Indians begin a series with the New York Yankees, Corey Kluber will be on the mound for the Tribe. The Reds are off tonight before wrapping up the first half of the season with a series against the St. Louis Cardinals. There isn’t any World Cup action until Saturday morning, but the Wimbledon Tournament is wrapping up this week, the Women’s Semifinals are on today.
