What Did I Miss?

Confusion in the Indians bullpen leads to a Reds comeback victory. Photo by USA Today.

The Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Indians continued their three-game series last night, as they played the second of three games in Cleveland. The Indians were rolling right along, heading into the 9th inning with a 4-0 lead. It was mostly a defensive battle throughout the game, as the Indians had scored their four runs in the first two innings. Something happened in the 9th inning though, as the Reds offense exploded for 7 runs in a wild comeback.

With two outs in the top of the 9th, the Indians were just a single out away from their 50th win of the year. Instead, the Reds went on a magnificent two-out rally to score 7 runs, and take a 7-4 lead. Joey Votto was up to bat with the bases loaded and the Reds trailing 4-3. His bases-clearing double gave the Reds a 6-4 lead, and he would score on a single by Eugenio Suarez on the next at bat.

Indians’ manager Terry Francona said he had a miscommunication with the bullpen. He requested “OP” for Oliver Perez, instead he got “OT”, Dan Otero. The Reds have taken the first two games of the series and will look to complete the sweep tonight.

In the first semifinal of the World Cup yesterday, France took down Belgium by a score of 1-0. Although Belgium held 60% of the possession in the match, France’s Samuel Umtiti scored the lone goal in the 51st minute in this one. The French had 19 shots compared to Belgium’s 9, and will advance to their first World Cup Final since 2006.

In the NFL, Buffalo Bills running back LeSean McCoy has been the target of a number of serious allegations, including domestic violence, animal violence, and drug use. In a home invasion yesterday, McCoy’s estranged ex-girlfriend was beaten and robbed of jewelry that McCoy had given her previously. The victim’s friend posted gruesome photos on social media (too gruesome to show here) with captions accusing McCoy being at fault. McCoy had this to say:

This is not the news the NFL is looking for in the off-season, or anytime for that matter. Hopefully the victim will make a speedy recovery and whoever is at fault for this crime will be fairly punished.

The Top Play of the Day comes from the Houston Astros and Oakland Athletics game, as the Astros walked off with one of the strangest game winners I have ever seen.

In today’s action, the second of the World Cup Semifinals will be played at 2:00pm between England and Croatia. The Wimbledon Tournament continues in London, and the Reds and Indians will play their final game of the Battle for Ohio.
